iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

Intresting.

I have updated to the version 14.2.1 and I have the results as following (iphone 12 pro):

video with HDR - with the famous HDR video tested from everyone before

(power save mode is off) :

100% = perfectly Black

70%= perfectly Black

50%= perfectly Black

30%= perfectly Black

10%= flashing greenish backlight sometime when pixel movement during playback

Preview Black image (power save mode is off):

100% = completely Black

70%= have the some greenish backlight and turn off in 5 second to black

50%= have the greenish backlight and turn off in 5 second to black

30%= have the very low greenish backlight and turn off in 5 second to black

10%= completely Black

When the power safe mode is on, the flash backlight is visible even at the level 100, but it turn off in few second. For video it appear flashing backlight till the end>

It seem like apple have work on something but still not there yet. which do have some improvement at least haha.

Same problem.

Its driving me crazy because I usually spend 30 minutes to an hour reading in bed before I go to sleep, and this awful glow is killing my eyes. I've had to bring my old phone to bed every night because this one is unusable at low brightness. I have a yearly trade in plan with my carrier, and I'm now counting down the 30 days I have to return my 11 Pro. If there is no software fix for this within the next week or two (and I doubt there will be, this sounds more like a hardware issue with faulty panels) I'm going to have to return my 12.

One other thing I found is that playing an HDR video lowers the brightness threshold for which the issue occurs. Here is what a dolbyvision HDR video looks like at 0%. You can see the horrendous green (on camera, its actually more gray to the human eye) tint.

When playing the same video at 30 - 50% brightness, the video itself is able to go pure black, but the sidebars, which should also be pure black, are still lit up, and flash erratically.

I have screen tint issue.

Brand new iPhone 12 Pro...got it yesterday and the screen has a yellowish/brown tint.

Comparison phot of iPhone XR and 12 Pro ...exact same brightness settings (about 75%)

I tried turning True Tone on and off....does not remove the yellowish tint, just changes the colouring slightly.

no matter what setting I adjust, it never looks white.

Turn your brightness down to less than 20%. Go to a dark room, and wait a minute for your eyes to adjust. Open that black image in full screen. If your phone has the problem, you will see a gray or green glow, when the phone screen should be producing no light at all, since all the pixels should be off when displaying that pure black image.

My case is a bit different. Here are three comparsion pictures of 12 pro max vs. X: Between 0° and about 20° the 12 screen is yellowish compared to the greyish/blueish X-screen. The more oblique the more green dominates the 12 screes while the X stays neutral. My 12 black is really black as the X is (therefore no pictures possible). For reference I took the widgetsmith wall papers. The screens are max bright, no nightshift, no white reduction, no true tone.

I'm not sure what that is but looks like you've taken a screenshot - you cannot capture the green flare issue with a screenshot, you have to take a picture of it with another phone/camera.

Anyway it is very strange, worrying and disappointing that Apple hasn't said anything official regarding this. It seems like they are hoping they can fix it with iOS update but in reality it's all faulty screens, they're trying to avoid the recall but it might be inevitable unfortunately...

Just to be clear, they didn’t say they expect to fix that with software fix, they told macrumors not to service these iPhones but to tell people to keep iOS up to date instead, which suggests Apple hopes to fix this with software patch.

However Apple still did not officially comment on this issue and it might as well be faulty screens which will need to be replaced.

Nov 26, 2020 2:19 AM in response to Alupent

I've done some research after AlvaroPa mentioned that OnePlus had that issue and it was never fixed.

Looks like some people have this with Google's OnePlus since April 2020 and they still didn't fix it - basically it's an error in manufacturing process. Google keeps saying they will release a software fix but they still didn't...

Also some other devices are affected by this green tint: OnePlus 7t, op8pro, S10 lite,S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Tab S7 and S7+ and some xiaomi devices with samsung screens.

It looks like this is quite common issue with AMOLED displays.

It's faulty screens but this issue could be potentially masked in a software patch to some degree, so ideally Apple should replace the screens but they could just hide this issue with a software fix to avoid the recall costs.

You may contact Apple support (get a cases number so you are in record) and maybe request for screen replacement once the Genius Bar is reopen in france.

I reported to Apple support few times and they offered this option or either you can exchange a new one (which I think it will be the same issue unless they fixed it or change the OLED supplier). Anyway, I will get a RDV once the Genius Bar is open (I have no idea when they will open yet at my city lille :( ) so unfortunately have to wait till then to see what going to do with this issue ...

Cheers.

Noticed this last night while watching YouTube, not completely fullscreen, so the two black strips on top and bottom of the phone had a blinking lightning like effect. If you don’t touch the screen, it seems to go away after about 10 seconds or so. Also is noticeable upon booting up. Otherwise not so much. Wondering myself if it is the phone or a software issue, hopefully just a software issue. Running IOS 14.2.1.

Yellow tint: I noticed the following on the window with good sunlight yesterday and compared it with an iphone x. The True Tone adjustment changes the color temperature on my 12 Pro Max very quickly and can be seen very well when you go from the sunshine to a room with warmer light. In bright light, however, one has the proof that the OLED of the 12PM can display the white perfect. With the iPhone X, however, the change can hardly be seen. This means that the 12PM would have to convert the signals from the sensor a little weaker via software and should not run into the yellow / warm so strongly.

Image flickering in black: I hope not, but rather believe that this is a hardware error. but if Apple can fix this with sw, that would be really great.

Today I should receive my send 12Pro, the first one was returned because the flickering (green/grey) was much more worst compared to the 12Pro max. In next couple of days I will decide if I will stay with the iPhone 12 pro Max or with the 12 pro.

My current theory is that "its not a bug, it's a feature."

No seriously. I think they calibrated the screen to behave like this intentionally in order to prevent smearing and ghosting, and just kinda.. forgot.. that a lot of people like to use their phones in bed at night. I think they figured no one would notice that tiny bit of light, and they are almost right; the vast majority of people may never notice the issue. I'd guess that all iphone 12 series phones have this problem, and even the people who say they tested it and don't probably do, they just aren't seeing it. But either way it's unacceptable to advertise that your phone has an oled screen with pure blacks and have that just not be true.

If this -was- done intentionally to prevent smearing/ghosting, then they should give us an option in accessibility or something to disable it. For people who like to read in bed, this is making my brand new phone unusable.
