iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

Mine doesn’t have this issue. It have a warmer or yellowish whites but not this. My original 12PM had this. I don’t think is SW related. It is a defect in the display itself. If it were a SW or OS issue the all IPhones would behave the same and there are 12PMs without this issue running 14.2.1. I installed 14.3 RC2 and these issues are not corrected.

Can you please tell me how I can check the production date of mine?

Anyway, you are absolutely right! We can’t turn a blind eye on a device which costs a fortune. I’m one of the pickiest guys who return their phone for the slightest issue that nobody can even notice.

I returned my 11 Pro three times last year and my brand new 12 once.

The guys at the Apple store know me by heart and smile at me when they see I need their help! 🤣

With that being said, I think we are just wasting time as the replacement units still have this issue. I think the entire lineup is affected to some extent.

When I got mine back from warranty, the first thing I did was check if it still had the flickering issue. Got my replacement unit, left the Apple store and got straight in the car (it was really dark). Long press on the right side button, the Apple logo appears, a couple of seconds and.... BAM! There we go again! Less visibile and annoying than the green tint I had on my first model but the glow was still there, although much more subtle and light grey instead of green. My brother got his back for the exact same reason, he was sitting in the car next to me. Exact same problem, his one was slightly worse than mine but sill “acceptable”.

So I thought: why the **** would I bother to ask for a replacement for the third time in a row if the risk is to get an even worse panel?

Given that I’m really cross with Apple and beyond disappointed, the options here are:

  • Ask for a refund and try to get it in a couple of months when the problem subsides (fingers crossed)
  • Stay positive and prey for a sw fix.

Btw, I’m from Italy so, as you can all tell, it’s a sort of pandemic and these faulty units are scattered all around the world.

14.3 has no effect and the Apple store reps act oblivious to the issue. This issue is known, widespread, and should be addressed. It tells me the lack of sincerity and openness of Apple as a company. The customer/consumers deserved to be helped and told openly what is happening. We spend great amounts of money on these devices and have certain expectations. To expect a proper functioning OLED without flickering is not a high expectation, it’s basic. The fact that Apple is staying silent on this issue is frightening, is it because it’s a hardware issue that affects enormous amounts of devices? Why is there no public statement not this?

So I returned and got another phone today. The issue is still there but better.

On the first one I got, raised blacks appeared in apps with black layout, eg. clock app and Instagram (dark mode). It also appeared in the YouTube app as well as viewing black images in the photos app.

Although this new one I got also shows raised blacks in YouTube and photos, it no longer shows raised blacks in apps with black layouts. As these two devices have problems at different levels, I am concerned that this is a hardware issue.

btw I tested at multiple brightness levels to ensure that the raised blacks didn’t appear in apps with black layouts.

Update: A colleague got his iPhone 12 PM today. According to the serial number, it was produced at the beginning of December (!). When Booting (white Apple logo on black), the black pixels light up. Also seen in a black-test HDR-video from YouTube. It only "flickers" slightly, but the error is definitely there. Even on iPhone 12's that left the factory yesterday.

Edit: iOS 14.2 was installed.

As I mentioned this before, this problem is still there. However this only happens when the phone is in low battery mode (SDR), or if the video is not available in HDR. Funny thing is that when viewing the same video on YouTube web, there is no flickering at all. Another notable thing is that the flicker on my previous phone was of a green tint and was much more visible. Although it can flicker in the YouTube app, the flicker was not green, it was more of a gray flash. It is also much less visible. Since this only occurs in the app but not on web, I suspect this is either a hardware issue or YouTube is not yet fully compatible with the iPhone 12 Series. As for the white bar that appears when you adjust your volume on YouTube, if you take a screenshot, you can see the white bar in the screenshot, meaning that it’s not the display acting up.

Alright guys, after a whole day of testing and using my phone, I found the issue to occur at following situations:

1)flickering side bars when watching true black on HDR on YouTube.

2)the whole screen was on (black pixels were raised) when watching the same video on YouTube web

3)zooming in and out on a picture would cause a quick flicker (the same picture in both Photos app and Messenger)

Problems that occurred on my first phone but not second

1)flickering was not green on my new one

2)flickering to occur when using apps with black background

3)green flicker when starting up

Funny, when I read your comment I was thinking this comment is directly from Apple:

„I need the overall functionality of the phone rather than complaining about its display. Hope people here rethink their priorities“

This could exactly said by Tim Cook to make this problem more usable to us fellows haha

This Leads me to the question @marcpodi

Are you Tom Cook? 😂
