Verizon FioS sells and rents routers including the one they place their name on as “g3100” and others (eg now problematic— see 4/19 publicity) g1100 router to go with their FIOS ONT box ( roughly analogous to a modem). The access to the user interface for even limited user interface activity/monitoring of one’s network (home or small business; mainly home) is via 192.168.1.1 or miofiosgateway.com. Apparently with BOTH those access points to configure controls for the router other than the simplest (eg changing the router password), the user following Verizon’s very own guide to consumers (185 pages long) will encounter a warning page that the site for control of the router does not have a self signed certificate. No employee working for Verizon will say WHY many things one is required to do or consent to in order to use their equipment (or JUST FOR PURPOSES OF THIS QUESTION TO GET ANY CONTROL OVER THE ROUTER THEY SUPPLY WITHOUT ELECTING TO IGNORE THE SECURITY WARNING ONE ENCOUNTERS ON APPLE DEVICES for the router page one is sent to, if using 192.168.1.1 or “myfiosgateway.com” as instructed by both tech support and in writing in sections 2 to 5 of their manual for consumers (downloadable from Verizon itself). Most pages on the web circle back to ONE or TWO comments or “answers” posted to REDDIT saying essentially “you can ignore the warning pages trust the warning pages because the company in question is VERIZON “; ie trust it because it’s a telecommunications behemoth. The previous iteration of the g3100 (g1100) was found to have an illegitimate dangerous “back door” allowing or potentially allowing terrible mischief— marketed by Verizon (& made by the same manufacturer). That was publicly disclosed in April 2019. Can I tell a family member to trust Verizon now with accessing the new router UI page for its latest rental or sold (both) g3100 router (many seem happy with but to monitor and manage) when one must agree to go past (accept) an unsigned or self-signed certificate that APPLE devices are set to warn us not to proceed to? Verizon has NO PUBLIC published explanation. Regardless of “why” Verizon has such a required relinquishment of initial rights to use their router; should we trust them or Apple?
