Verizon FioS sells and rents routers including the one they place their name on as “g3100” and others (eg now problematic— see 4/19 publicity) g1100 router to go with their FIOS ONT box ( roughly analogous to a modem). The access to the user interface for even limited user interface activity/monitoring of one’s network (home or small business; mainly home) is via 192.168.1.1 or miofiosgateway.com. Apparently with BOTH those access points to configure controls for the router other than the simplest (eg changing the router password), the user following Verizon’s very own guide to consumers (185 pages long) will encounter a warning page that the site for control of the router does not have a self signed certificate. No employee working for Verizon will say WHY many things one is required to do or consent to in order to use their equipment (or JUST FOR PURPOSES OF THIS QUESTION TO GET ANY CONTROL OVER THE ROUTER THEY SUPPLY WITHOUT ELECTING TO IGNORE THE SECURITY WARNING ONE ENCOUNTERS ON APPLE DEVICES for the router page one is sent to, if using 192.168.1.1 or “myfiosgateway.com” as instructed by both tech support and in writing in sections 2 to 5 of their manual for consumers (downloadable from Verizon itself). Most pages on the web circle back to ONE or TWO comments or “answers” posted to REDDIT saying essentially “you can ignore the warning pages trust the warning pages because the company in question is VERIZON “; ie trust it because it’s a telecommunications behemoth. The previous iteration of the g3100 (g1100) was found to have an illegitimate dangerous “back door” allowing or potentially allowing terrible mischief— marketed by Verizon (& made by the same manufacturer). That was publicly disclosed in April 2019. Can I tell a family member to trust Verizon now with accessing the new router UI page for its latest rental or sold (both) g3100 router (many seem happy with but to monitor and manage) when one must agree to go past (accept) an unsigned or self-signed certificate that APPLE devices are set to warn us not to proceed to? Verizon has NO PUBLIC published explanation. Regardless of “why” Verizon has such a required relinquishment of initial rights to use their router; should we trust them or Apple?

I have Verizon Fios. I have a box on the side of the house. I have a cat5+ cable running from the box on the side of the house to my in side of the house router. I replaced the Verizon router FiOS G1100 with my own TP-Link TL R600VPN. Works fine. I hadn't thought about security, but now I have one less worry.

If your worried, replace the verizon router with your own.

VikingOSX. Thanks — I thought some Apple staff (or awardees or contractors) did peruse and use the forum; be that as it may I appreciate your clarifying it’s not official Apple replies I’m getting from anyone though you have earned trust and engagement reflected in your level 9 status.

I just NOW while typing this (via inadvertently hitting a button on a device type I don’t usually use, I hope; cannot immediately ascertain how to undo) had ALL TEXT HERE CHANGE (just colors and font). My apologies if that makes it hardernto read (it does for me and TYPOS unfortunately are appearing).

Anyhow, if VikingOSX or others can provide further input in this thread I’d be very grateful. And, apparently thousands of pleople (of Verizon’s millions of customers) do have concerns about the warning page AND NOW I HAVE SEEN APPLE’S THREE LEVELS OF “TRUST” for certificates of authentication I am better informed but do not know if I have so many choices available.I can switch routers but this concern may arise with any (unless Apple vouches for all brands it sells “app” or subscriptions fir in its online store).

I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT WHEN APPLE FINDS A THREAT POTENTIAL IT PUTS A site or page into a “TIER 2 TRUST CATEGORY”. After that, IF A THREAT IS 100% ESTABLISHED FOR APPLE’S ANALYSIS PURPOSES THE WEB PAGE GOES INTO “TIER 3 “ie, “BLOCKED.” Apple does not list the specific warning language corresponding to each level they have fir cuncern about a certificate (LEVELS 1 to 3 for cettifycate “TRUST LEVELS”).

Does anybody know the difference between warning language (if any) as between LEVEL 2 and LEVEL 3. I don’t want to proceed past any Level 3 warning and will have to keep experimenting with router after router (and even then this may or will occur with many). Am grateful for your response VikimgOSX: concise, clear and mincing no words.

I found the trust levels after I posted and it’s an imperfect world so I did think I might ask as grateful,as I am for the reply I got. Also wondering about VERIZON telling me I only have to use one device (sacrifice it...) to proceed to their warned-about site and therafter “all MY communications with the router occurs inside the router” when I use the UI available in a meaningful form ONLY by pricferdingbto the earned-about website. Indeed I’m not sure using a different router type (I bought several in exasperation) would get rid of this problem. It’s a telecom I need fir internet access and just installed FioS where I live: I don’t have perfect choices among the telecoms though at least Verizon. Otifies ine promptly if any changes are made to ines account.

Scoured a one fir them bit I’m cuncrrned as heck about that “EDGE.” Verizon CLAIMS once you trust them on one device the communication is “done within the router. Perhaps you’d understand, VikingOSX, what the heck that comment means but I don’t. I’m not hating on Verizon buy they’re NOT a software co: agreed; yet they’re my new telecomm “choice.” Truly thanks whether you even see this post Viking OSX. I am sure you stand by what you already said but EACH option out there for home use seems to have a drawback, including subscriptions or appsold by Apple on its online store (maybe it is the products themselves that are not made by Apple that people complain about and not the apps on Aplles store; surely Apple cannot vouch for every app it sells online that yheecperiwmce will be “LEVEL 1 certifate trust.”; if Apple could so vouch I’d use one of THOSE routers I’ve bought).
