iPhone 16 Pro doesn't connect to iMac via USB-C

So, iPhone 16 Pro when connected to iMac with provided USB-C cable is not charging and not recognised by Mac.

  • Cable is good (works with other phone)
  • Mac port is good (works with other phone)
  • iPhone port is good (everything works, charges and connects with usb-c to usb-a cable connected to usb-a port on the Mac)

What now??

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

I was just informed by Apple that my IMAC will not connect to the new 16's.

Although my IMAC is only a few years old, it is not cabable of running Sequoia therefore the new IPHONE 16's will never connect with this computer!

So you upgrade the IPHONE, and now have to by a new IMAC to make things compatible.

NOT HAPPY!!!

As per Iphone 16 and 16 pro specs it should connect to a mac running ventura, so assuming this is a bug, Apple must fix this problem asap.

System Requirements:

  • Apple Account (required for some features)
  • Internet access21
  • Syncing to a Mac or PC requires:
    • macOS Catalina 10.15 or later using the Finder
    • macOS High Sierra 10.13 through macOS Mojave 10.14.6 using iTunes 12.8 or later
    • Windows 10 or later using iTunes 12.12.10 or later (free download from apple.com/itunes/download)

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max - Technical Specifications - Apple

Oct 18, 2024 7:22 AM in response to janplexy

Sorry. It was an old Apple USB A to Lighting cable that I had used to connect my iPhone 14 to my iMac. I added the Lighting to USB C adapter so it would connect to the new iPhone 16MP. It worked! I was able to backup and charge the new 16MP via the 2017 iMac.

This is the adapter I used. 4 for $12.00 on Amazon.

I had tried a couple of NON Apple USB A to USB C cables (camera chargers) I had lying around and they Did Not work. Not every cable will work. I believe it has to be a good quality cable.

I also have read elsewhere where they used the Apple USB C to C cable that came with the phone and a USB A to USB C adapter and that had worked too. Haven't tried that yet so can't verify it.

Is it just me or is Apple quality slipping??

Hello, good news for everybody !!

I just updated my new iPhone 16 Pro Max to iso 18.1 then I updated my iMac Late 2017 21,5 4K 3 GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core to the last version od MacOs Ventura, build 13.7.1 (22H221)

Then the first time you connect the iPhone to the Mac using a Thunderbolt 4 cable (even if my iMac has only 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports), the system will recognize the iPhone, then the system will download an items to fully support the phone and DONE !! now it works good !! I made a backup of roughly 250 Gbytes in just 5 minutes !!!!

It seems that was a software issue now patched !!

enjoy !!

According to the Technical Specifications for your iPhone, you should be able to sync it even with a Mac that is running High Sierra. Whomever told you that you must run Sequoia did not know what they were talking about.

Now if your iMac is so old that you cannot upgrade it as far as High Sierra, you are out of luck. I think you would have to be using a Mac released about 15+ years ago (before 2010) to be in that boat.

Just found this thread today. Incredibly unacceptable that they didn’t make it compatible. With how much we’ve already spent on phones, computers, etc. Apple is embarrassing ! But hey you have a cool new camera button 😂

Did you read the post just above your post from the Author, which is who you posted to? If you had, you'd see they got it sorted and it's working as expected. So just what is embarrassing?

Tried to connect using c to lightning adapter. Didn’t work. Went to buy adapter at Office and genuine Apple adapter was $115. Bought 4 of the adapters (pictured in a previous post that the poster claimed worked for them) from Amazon for $15. Apple is such a ripoff. I tunes no longer works the way I need it to work so this is the last iPhone I will be buying.

Was it an Apple USB A -to- Lighting cable and then the C adapter added?

I think I'm the only one that posted a Pic of an adapter so guessing you were referring to mine. Sorry It didn't work for you.

I have found be it an Apple adapter or off brand they have limits on what works and when. for example:

I have an Adapter (Apple C to HDMI) and an off brand (C to SD card reader). If both are plugged in only one (or none) will work. Unplug either one and the other will work.

I agree on the iTunes things. Love my Apple but the two apps I hate the most are iTunes/Music and Photos.
