iPhone 16 Pro trouble editing Live Photos

I also experience this problem.

To be more specific. For me changing the key frame of a live photo actually works, but if I right after having changed the key frame, try to hit the "Auto adjust" button the Photo app dies (instantly! not within a few seconds as you describe).

If I go back to the photo and revert the key frame change, the photo can be edited again. And here comes a few other interesting findings:

• If I open a picture taken with my iPhone 16 Pro from my old iPhone XS, guess what!? the problem is there too! The photo app crashes. I'm running iOS 18.0.1 on both phones.
• If a take a photo with the iPhone XS and edit it on the same phone the problem is not there
• If a take a photo with the iPhone XS and edit it on the same phone the problem is not there. If I open iPhone XS-photos on my iPhone 16 Pro the problem is not there
• And guess what (again)!! If I open a photo taken with the iPhone 16 Pro on my Mac Mini (running Sequoia), the Photo app crashes immediately when I try to change the key frame.

Hence... The problem lies in the photos that the iPhone 16 creates. The camera produces photos that are corrupt in some way, or it has a data structure that cannot be interpreted by the photo apps on iPhone and Mac.

I'm a 1000% percent sure of that we are not just a few having this problem, and even more sure of that Apple knows that the problem exists....

I have reported the issue to "feedback.apple.com".

I had the same problem. Spent 3 hours in the Apple Store. Tried several different phones and they all had the same problem. Try editing a photo after changing the initial photo in live and it would crash. I checked the display phones and they all did it too. Determined that the phones with the 18.0.1 all had the same exact problem. I ended up just returning the phone and going back to my old SE for now.

The bug seems to have been (quietly as usual with Apple) fixed in the iOS 18.1 update that was released yesterday. At least for me.

The iOS 18.1 luckily solved the problem for me. Have you updated?

Me too. Apple need to sort this photo editing issue out, my photo app also keeps crashing, I can’t edit any Live Photos at all, I have to duplicate a single in order to edit anything. Tedious, and not like Apple to release a sub par product. These phones aren’t cheap, do I really need to revert to an older model after spending nearly £1000 on an iPhone Pro?!

Alas - easy fix for photo editing on iPhone -16. All fixed when you upgrade to OS 18-2 which evidently was not sent out to automatically down load (it is rather large), but is fixed all my problems!

I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, which I purchased specifically for the camera. Photo editing has always worked flawlessly up until about maybe two months ago. It’s an iOS issue not a phone issue. Apple has not figured this out and it’s angered a lot of iPhone users. My husband‘s Samsung takes far better photographs and editing is flawless. Apple needs to get their act together😡.

Suggesting something is an iOS issue, means it would be an issue affecting most. If it was, this forum would be flooded with users complaining, yet it's not. I'm not suggesting you don't have an issue, but let's not jump to the conclusion it's an iOS issue. What needs to be determined is why YOU have an issue. No one I know has an issue.

• Have you updated your iPhone to the most recent iOS 18.2.1 release?
• Have you ever Force Restarted your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support (CA)
• And if all else fails, have you scheduled an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and showed the issues you're having to Apple --> Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

I have the exact same problem on my 16 pro

max. It doesn’t look like a iOS version issue, I have the latest version on my other 14 pro, and when I edit a Live Photo there after changing the key photo, the app works perfectly. Not sure if this is an issue on all 16 line up.

Similar issues with editing photos. App instantly crashes when you try and change brightness for example. Turned phone off and on and seem to solve the problem but now after I edit a photo it freezes and doesn’t save. 2 weeks into owning the 16 pro max and it is by far the buggiest iPhone I’ve had. Any ideas or should I return the handset for a new one?

Hey I saw everyone with the same problems I had using iPhone 16 pro's photo editing. This was very frustrating and upsetting.

With the help of Apple support I got a system upgrade to 18.2 (which is evidently new and not automatically distributed) which fixed the problem. Hooray!

You aren't speaking with Apple. I have no issues editing photos on my iPhone, so no, it's not an iOS issue.

Have you taken your phone to the Genius Bar at your closest Apple Store and shown it to them? You can certainly let Apple know your thoughts here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I have no such issues with my iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max. The battery on both phones is nothing short of amazing and to see, I just opened a live photo and had absolutely no issues editing it.

To suggest no one should buy one of the new iPhone's because you seem to be having an issue, when millions upon millions of them are now out in the wild is ridiculous.
